@@dje7917 Hello, I’m not sure if the R6 has had a firmware update since I made those videos to allow you to select what eye to focus on . But if there is one, you should be able to enable a setting to allow you to choose what eye. Other than that, i don’t know what would cause that. I know the Canon R5 always has that feature, but not 100% sure if the R6 does.

This video just came across my feed and reminded me of apprenticing with and assisting top US wedding photographer Monte Zucker back in 1972-74 when was looking for a start as a ‘professional’ photographer (i.e., someone who can actually make a decent living selling their photos). Monte developed a much copied style by using Northern skylight and a reflector for his formal wedding portraits of bride, groom and their parents with backgrounds he painted himself on roll-up linen window shades, one in dark browns in the style of Rembrandt paintings and the other in cool pastels in the stye of Monet. A North facing window was always used because it faces the diffuse skylight and exposure is consistent most of the day. The method of posing was simple; just turn the face to the window at a 45° angle and then adjust based on how the light models the shape of the nose, raising the face up into the light as needed to get light past the brow into the eyes. Once the face was posed that way to the light it was simply a matter of walking around the face with the camera from near the window for a full-face (both ears equal), oblique >o / o (eye socket notch profiled), or profile (face split exactly in half) with the background suspended from a single heavy duty stand in the center rotating around behind the subject. I square Reflectasol reflector was used on a wheeled stand (actually a modified medical IV pole) which was wheeled around keeping it forward of the face to avoid over filling the side. The way Monte explained lighting strategy is that the human eye will reflexively be attracted to to the thing which CONTRASTS the most with the tone of the background and his ‘low key” strategy was based on highlighting the front “mask” of the face, eyes and mouth, with the 45° light angle to nose then making sure EVERYTHING was darker by degrees: shadows on front of face, shadows on back of head, hands if in photo, clothing, background to create a contrast gradient and eliminate anything which would pull attention off the face. The other part of his trademark wedding style was using that same 3D modeling 45° to nose lighting strategy with careful attention to facial angles by using dual flash in an off-camera KEY over FILL provided by an identical flash on a bracket which keeps light 16-18” above lens. This is common today with ETTL wireless flash but he was the one who introduced it to wedding photography over 50 years ago using the very first portable electronic flashes and photo-cell trigger on the slave flash. At weddings we put the off-camera KEY flash on the same rolling IV stand used to hold the reflector which made it easy to roll around and place it 45° from the noses, Ratios and exposure were controlled entirely by distance using a clever method he created based on the inverse square law. If shooting from 11 feet we put the off camera flash at 8 feet which makes it 2x brighter per inverse square. Moving into 8ft to shoot, the off camera flash moves in to 5.6 feet to keep the ratio the same (2x stronger than Fill) and the aperture was closed one stop to keep exposure the same. Move in to 5.6 ft for a close-up? Off camera flash moves to 4 feet and aperture is closed another stop. Reenacted ceremony photos taken with dual flash that way have the same look as the daylight portraits and blended together perfectly in the album which back then consisted of 50-80 photos. The same two flash strategy was at the reception putting the off camera flash 45° to the noses when possible or a 45° angle from behind and to the side to mimic the look of sunny backlight.

Thanks for the great video. I believe I am still doing something wrong. I was using Canon 5D Mark II, and my photos were absolutely sharp, eyes really sharp at F2.8. Now, I just bought a R6 Mark II, and I have tried all settings, Spot AF, One Point AF, Eyes AF, but the photos are not even close to how sharp they were with my 5D Mark II. I am kind of frustrated, because I have watched so many videos on UA-cam of people so impressed with R6 II focus. I am starting to think that I should have upgraded to the 5D Mark IV. :(

What an amazing story Roberto. A lot of times we search for excuses to not do things that are uncomfortable or even challenging, whether consciously or unconsciously. And I can definitely include myself doing that too often though luckily not always. This is a great example of what is possible if we keep pushing and not let these voices in our minds telling us „you can’t do this, you’ll never make it, it’s way too much and too tough“ take over!

I've followed your photography journey since Creative Live. I've learned a lot from this story to take little steps to reach goals and don't give up. I like comfort too much. Hi Roberto. Just want to first say thank you for your tutorials. They have helped me out a lot. After watching this video, I customize most of my settings very similar to yours. There is one question that I have. Towards the end of the video you talked about the camera’s cropping and aspect ratio and you have yours set to 4:3. In the video it looks like it shows you the two bars for where the 4:3 is and then just outside of those two black bars you can still see where the rest of the picture will be and it’s translucent. How did you get it to be translucent? On mine it’s still showing that it’s blacked out on those sides?
